Skincare Stash: Cosrx

12 May 2018

I seldom talk about beauty stuff but when I do, they are and will be the things I swear by. Famous for its natural ingredients and fragrance-free options, Cosrx defines minimalism for skincare. Their 'less is more' ideology is what makes their products great and receive a cult following. In fact, one of my beauty goals is to try almost every single Cosrx product available in their collection. As of now, I've tried six products and will share them with you.

BHA Blackhead Power Cream

What it is

A silky, thick night cream (or possible sleeping pack) containing 4% betaine salicylate to exfoliate dead skin and moisturize the face, unclogs pores, controls oil, reduce redness and improve skin texture, leaving it soft and supple. The key ingredients also include beeswax, centella asiatica, niacinamide and honey to hydrate and nourish the skin. It is said to be ideal for troubled skin as it has a balanced pH level of 4.0-5.0.

My experience

First impression was: wow, it's kind of...greasy and leaves a film on my face. I don't think I've used a night cream this thick before since I've always loved a more runny cream or gel-based moisturizer. With that said, although I'm not a fan of its texture, the product does its job at reducing the inflammation of my acne. It does not, however, reduce the redness of my rosacea — I still have to rely on my trusty azelaic acid for this. Despite the claim, I don't find it does anything for my pores or blackheads so really, aside from being my occasional night cream, I don't find this product satisfactory at all. I also dislike the fact that it contains dimethicone so perhaps it will work better on people who cannot handle the stronger blackhead power liquid version.

Verdict: 3/5

Low pH Gel Cleanser

What it is

A super mild and gentle gel-cleanser with purifying botanical ingredients and mild acids to cleanse the skin, remove makeup and other oil-based residue with a balanced pH level of 5.0. Great for all skin types!

My experience

This is my holy grail cleanser. I tried to change my primary cleanser once, got my rosacea redness back, immediately went back to this magic right here and made an oath to never abandon this cleanser — at least it won't happen anytime soon. It works great for my redness, does not strip my skin and leaves my face feeling fresh when used in the morning. For people with extra dry skin, however, I'd recommend choosing a secondary moisturizing cleanser because this might cause a slight change to your skin texture due to its exfoliating effect although nothing major. I have combination skin and I personally have a hydrating cleanser that I use once or twice a week.

Verdict: 5/5

Natural BHA Skin Returning Emulsion

What it is

Lightweight and hydrating, this emulsion keeps skin feeling moisturized while keeping it free from dead skin cells and excess sebum. Centella Asiatica Extract Water serves as the base of the formula to provide more hydration compared to mineral water, followed by hyaluronic acid for optimal hydration while maintaining the lightweight serum-like texture. Great for oily to combination skin and those who struggle with acne.

My experience

I'm currently using this emulsion as daytime moisturizer and so far so good, no cystic breakouts or redness aggravation. I also love the lightweight texture and how it sinks quickly into my skin thus reducing the long-awaited absorption time. After using it for about 2-3 weeks now, I also feel that it keeps the oil on my T-zone at bay (I could use a little more time even if it's just for a few minutes so I don't have to blot) and helps reduce my blemishes. It works great when combined with my holy grail Hadalabo lotion.

Verdict: 4/5

PHA Renewal Moisture Cream

What it is

Formulated for sensitive skin gals, this product contains 3% PHA and 50% coconut fruit extract to deeply hydrate the skin. Great for dry and dehydrated skin who needs intense moisture help, it also contains 2% niacinamide and has a pH level of 5.0.

My experience

I bought this as samples and I'm glad I did not purchase the full size immediately. Since I'm currently on a skincare acid hunt (and craze), when I heard that PHA works great for sensitive skin, I was instantly intrigued to try! For the record, I have combination and sensitive skin so anything gentle and mild definitely caught my eyes. Quite frankly, this isn't a night cream for me. While it's not as thick or as greasy as the blackhead power cream, I feel like this is a liiitle too much that I'm starting to suspect that it may have caused very small acne on my cheeks. Very small but enough to freak me out. I think this is definitely better for dry and mature skin.

Verdict: 3/5

Honey Ceramide Eye Cream

What it is

Enriched with ceramides, anti-aging ingredients and honey, this lightweight gel-like eye cream claims to moisturize, strengthen the moisture barrier around the eyes, stimulate cell growth and reduce wrinkles while restoring firmness.

My experience

This is the newest Cosrx product in my stash and I've only used this twice so I can't really judge. Texture wise, I don't have any problem with it; it's creamy, a little bit goes a long way and it really loves my under eyes looking naturally dewy. The one thing I love loooove about this product is that you get a spatula for free! I think brands should do this more often because as much as I don't mind sticking my fingers into a tub of cream, a spatula is way better and more hygienic. Aside from its moisturizing effect, I don't think I will experience any firming since I don't have fine lines (I'm 22, you guys.) As for dark circles, well...let's just say that I gave up looking for eye creams that work on dark circles. These days I just buy eye creams for the sake of hydration.

Verdict: 4/5

BHA Blackhead Power Liquid

What it is

This highly raved product is a chemical exfoliating toner with 4% BHA that claims to prevent blackheads, minimize pores, brighten the skin and fight off blemishes due to their anti-inflammatory ingredients. Other ingredients include white willow bark and B5 vitamin which are known to have great moisturizing and anti-wrinkle properties. Although said to work best for oily to combination skin, some dry skin gals have said that they love to use this product as well.

My experience

Even though I have combination skin (oily T-zone), I don't use as my primary toner. Instead, I will only use this once or twice per week but only on my T-zone and certain areas with breakouts. I don't get acne very often but when I do, it's the painful cystic kind. When that happens, I immediately compressed my nose for around 5-10 minutes. Depending on the severity of my breakout, I usually wait for 20~30 minutes before proceeding to use azelaic acid as topical acne cream. If not then I'll take the time to wait for science to do its thing before moving on to my moisturizer or serum. After a week, I can definitely see why everybody raves about this product — because it really works! Some people said that it works best when combined with the blackhead power cream, however, I myself love the liquid version better. The liquid version also has lesser ingredients compared to the cream which has dimethicone in it. My friend told me that while it helps to control her sebum production, using it everyday proves to be too much as she felt her skin turning into this grainy, sandpaper texture which is surprising since her face is extremely oily compared to mine. That said, I wouldn't recommend combination skin to use this every single day but different skin works differently so take my words with a grain of salt. Also, warning beforehand: it may cause temporary purging for some people. I personally do not experience horrible purging but I definitely feel a slight change of texture on my skin.

Verdict: 4/5

Aside from its great ingredients, packaging (minimalism is my gem) and mostly effective claims, Cosrx has turned me into a lover of chemical exfoliants. I've stopped using physical ones because rubbing scrubs on my face feel harsh and a little bit painful (the body shop's amazonian acai mask, I'm looking at you!) I think I'm going to go as far as to say that Cosrx is one of my all-time favorite skincare brands.

How about you, have you tried any Cosrx product?
